Three weeks after Sunny Ade, the King of Juju Music, marked his 78th birthday, it is now confirmed that a book entitled: “Olu Makinde; Master of His Game”, revealing the controversies and manoeuvring that accompanied the first musical competition in Nigeria, held in Ibadan, Oyo State will be launched.
Though the date and venue for the launch of the historical biography of the late journalist has not been made public yet, the book is timely as KSA fans took to the various social media platforms to demand for his biopic or documentary on September 22, 2024, while expressing their wishes and prayers for his good health and long life.
47 years ago in Ibadan, Sunny Ade defeated Ebenezer Obey to the second place in the competition, while Dele Abiodun and late Sikiru Ayinde Barrister came third and fourth respectively. Fela was a distant sixth because his fans were predominantly undergraduates who could not afford to buy papers then as votes were via newspaper stubs (akin to SMS now) back then.
The Alaafin of Oyo, Late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi (III), crowned Sunny as king, and the musician has proved over decades that he deserved to win the competition organised by the late Olutade Makinde (I), editor of the “Entertainer”, one of the titles of the defunct Sketch Publishing Newspaper Limited.
Written by the son of the late journalist, Tade Makinde (II), a renowned Engineer in Ibadan (names withheld); is the chairman of the event, while the chairperson of the Princess Aderonke Adedoja, the Chairman of ARA Foundation, has been confirmed as a Special Guest.
Tade Makinde retired from Nigerian Tribune, having worked on the Entertainment desk for 19 years.
