Shock, grief and disbelief have enveloped the university community of Tansian University, Umunya, Anambra State, following the sudden death of its newly inaugurated Vice Chancellor, Professor Carter Dike Umeoduagu.
Professor Umeoduagu, 44, a renowned Professor of Microbiology, was formally inaugurated as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the university on October 2, 2026, in an elaborate event attended by his family, friends, colleagues and associates.
The celebration was short-lived as barely 24 hours after assuming office, the university don was reportedly taken ill and subsequently died on October 3, 2026, leaving the academic community and those close to him devastated.
The late professor was not only an academic but also a former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, where he represented Aguata 1 Constituency.
His death has sent shockwaves through the university community, particularly coming just one day after his formal installation as Vice Chancellor at a time when the institution had been grappling with a prolonged crisis.
The sudden turn of events has left many mourning a tenure that had barely begun, with the university community losing its new chief executive almost as soon as he assumed the responsibility.
