History is being made in Nigeria and other parts of the world today 22,September 2026 as the legendary juju musician ,song writer and Multi Instrumentalist,Otunba Sunday Ishola Adeniyi Adegeye ,MFR aka King Sunny turned 80.
Turning 80 is a milestone and quite an achievement,but the King as he is being called chose a solemn celebration.
He has asked all his friends, fans,children and well wishers to pray along with him because he is not in the mood for party but to communicate with God through prayer
King Sunny Adé was born Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye on September 22, 1946, in Òṣogbo Nigeria, to a Yoruba royal family connected to Ondo and Akure.
His father was a church organist and his mother was a trader, immersing him in both religious and traditional musical environments.
KSA left grammar school in Ondo under the guise of attending the University of Lagos to pursue his passion for music.
He began his career playing highlife music with Moses Olaiya’s Federal Rhythm Dandies.
He later formed his own band, The Green Spots band in 1967 (later renamed the African Beats).
His brand of Juju music is blended traditional Yoruba percussion and vocals with Western rock and roll, incorporating the pedal steel guitar, synthesizers, and multiple electric guitars.
For popularizing Juju music KSA was crowned the “King of Juju” in 1977.
He signed with Island Records in 1982 and released the critically acclaimed album ‘Juju Music’ (1982) and ‘Syncro System’ (1983), which earned him his first Grammy nomination—a historic first for a Nigerian artist.
Earned a second Grammy nomination for his 1998 album ‘Odu’ and till date KSA has released over 70 albums.
King Sunny Ade has also won awards both home and abroad for his dexterity in the field of music .
